The Hubbell Pew

Maybe what is good about religion is playing that the Kingdom will come, until in the joy of your playing, the hope and the rhythm and comradeship and poignance and mystery of it – you start to see that the playing is itself the first-fruits of the Kingdom’s coming and of God’s presence within us and among us.—Frederick Buechner

Weekly Meditation

Webb, what is important is not what others say about your work, but whether the artist is pleased and more importantly the creator is pleased. -- 8 year old philosopher, Will, explaining to me that he takes Lego's from all his various kits and puts them together to make his own creations.

I don’t believe that Will has studied Tao Te Ching — If you look to others for fulfillment you will never be truly fulfilled. Nor do I think Will has started tackling the philosophy of Immanuel Kant — When I act out of desire (to please), my action is dictated by something outside myself, not by the action of my will.

I spent awhile one Saturday watching Will combine Lego's from at least 10 other kits into his own piece of art ( not a starship destroyer or transformer) and listening to him. His simple words and absorption with his design fascinated his Grandfather. His explanation of what is important remains with me. It is like those cartoons which we are all so familiar of the man climbing the mountain to pose a question to a wise Guru. My Guru that day was sitting on the floor of his room surrounded by Lego’s of all colors, shapes and sizes.

Each of us, in our own way, tries to please our critics; thinking by doing so we will be pleased. Perhaps Will was saying to his Grandfather that when I am content to be simply myself, and don’t compare or compete, I please the Creator.
