The Hubbell Pew

Maybe what is good about religion is playing that the Kingdom will come, until in the joy of your playing, the hope and the rhythm and comradeship and poignance and mystery of it – you start to see that the playing is itself the first-fruits of the Kingdom’s coming and of God’s presence within us and among us.—Frederick Buechner

Weekly Meditation

Jesus said to them, “ The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going. -- John 12:35

The commentary in the Oxford Annotated Bible says, “ All evidence is in: it is time to act.” In the prologue to the Benedictine rule it quotes this verse by saying, “Run while you have the light of life, lest the darkness of death seize hold of you.” That modern philosopher, NIKE, interprets this verse by saying, “ Just do it.”

Every day God calls out to us bringing us into immediate relationship with God, if we but hear. However, most of the time our ears are filled with ear plugs, cell phones, the noise of our “must do today lists,” or the demands that others place on us. Each of us needs to find a little quiet time to listen to the light. I used to say I did my best thinking in the shower. I called them my “shower thoughts.” In truth it was those few moments of privacy and quiet time that allowed me to listen to God and my heart.

Equally as difficult is the acting, walking, running part. The inertia of our daily routine makes us immovable objects. People who specialize in making people more efficient recommend taking on a ‘big task” first, others recommend getting the small distractions out of the way first before tackling a major endeavor. I don’t know what is best. I tend to go to the problem that is the “loudest.” In doing so I suspect I am walking away from the light and into the darkness. As my football coach used to tell the team the day after a bad game, “ It’s time we got back to basics.”

Jesus taught us the basics — Listen to God, then act. Remember that leaving the darkness and entering the light is the same distance between east and west — only one step. Go ahead. Make the turn.
