The Hubbell Pew

Maybe what is good about religion is playing that the Kingdom will come, until in the joy of your playing, the hope and the rhythm and comradeship and poignance and mystery of it – you start to see that the playing is itself the first-fruits of the Kingdom’s coming and of God’s presence within us and among us.—Frederick Buechner

Weekly Meditation

A vision without a task is a dream.A task without a vision is drudgery.A vision and a task is the hope of the world. -- McMakin

This quote is repeated in common lesson five of the EFM materials. It struck me the first time I read it and it has stayed with me. How many times have I dreamed but can’t see the path or task that moves me closer to my goal? More importantly, how often have I seen the path but been unwilling because of worldly concerns or attachments to take up the task? How often do I rise from bed in the morning, head to the bus stop, and go through my daily tasks giving no thought to vision or dreams? When asked I say, “ I am surviving, or just keeping my head above water.” I know I am not alone in my feelings. As McMakin reminds us above — A vision and a task is the hope of the world. I have a bookshelf of quotes and books on the subject. There are no easy answers. I have met many people who were “weighed down by life,” both young and old. In many cases, I understand why. I have also met many who are not “weighed down,” both young and the very old. In those cases, I want to know why. What I have discovered from the latter is that to them no task is drudgery, they believe dreams are obtainable. They simply see life differently than those who are “weighed down.” They simply see life with different eyes. Spring and Summertime is a good time to begin seeing with ‘new eyes.” The days are longer, natural beauty abounds, and we shed the heavy wool for linen and cotton. It is a good time to take a walk in the garden with God and talk about his vision and task for us. That walk will bring us hope.
