The Hubbell Pew

Maybe what is good about religion is playing that the Kingdom will come, until in the joy of your playing, the hope and the rhythm and comradeship and poignance and mystery of it – you start to see that the playing is itself the first-fruits of the Kingdom’s coming and of God’s presence within us and among us.—Frederick Buechner

Weekly Meditation

Home. The word circled comfortably in my mouth like bubble gum, swished around sweetly soft and satisfying. Home. Try saying it aloud to yourself. Home. Isn’t it like taking a bite out of something lovely? If only we could eat words. -- Sol Luckman

I return to DC from 10 days of a wonderful vacation to the West Coast. Both our hosts quickly said on arrival, “Make yourself at home.” This is the extreme compliment to a guest. Our castle, your castle; our cottage, your cottage; mi casa, su casa. They invited us in not just for shelter, but into a special part of their lives. It is a place where they dream in peace and by inviting us in they invite us in to dream as well.

Simone Weil said, “ To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.” I experienced, learned, and saw a lot on our trip. Most importantly we were bathed in friendship and hospitality by friends both old and new. Thanks to them we were always rooted and in our real home, the home of inner peace. We have just been on a true vacation.
